Over 80% of small businesses will need to update their Office package in 2025

Study by Intra2net shows low acceptance of Office 2021

Tübingen, 06.11.2024 - More than 80% of small companies in Germany use Microsoft Office packages that will need to be updated next year. It is also clear that Office 2021 has not been able to establish itself in on-premises installations. These are two key findings of the latest SME study by Intra2net (www.intra2net.com). The groupware and security provider analysed data from over 1,500 PC workstations in small companies and compared it with the figures from previous studies.

High wave of software migration rolls towards companies

At 70%, more than two thirds of companies currently rely on the Office 2016 and Office 2019 versions, with Office 2016 remaining the most frequently used version at 37%. However, security updates for both solutions will no longer be offered by the manufacturer after 14 Oct. 2025. In fact, 16% of SME workstations are still running versions of Office 2013 or Office 2010 - software packages that are over ten years old and for which support has long since expired.

Cautious acceptance of Office 2021

With a market share of 14%, Office 2021 - while the successor version is already available - plays a subordinate role in the SME segment for on-premises installations. A direct comparison with the SME study from 2022 shows that more than half of Office 2010 and 2013 users have not migrated in the last two years. At the same time, the market share of Office 2016 and 2019 at the companies surveyed has remained stable over the last 24 months.

‘The results of this year's SME study surprised even us in this magnitude. They show a massive need to catch up in the coming months. To make matters worse, support for Windows 10 and Exchange 2016 and 2019 will also end in autumn 2025. Many small companies will therefore have to renew large parts of their IT infrastructure in the coming year. Otherwise, they expose themselves to high security risks,’ explains Steffen Jarosch, CEO of Intra2net AG.

This year's SME study by Intra2net is based on a survey conducted in September 2024 among 107 German companies with 10 to 49 employees and 1,596 PC workstations with Microsoft Office.

Only companies without Hosted Exchange or Microsoft Office 365 were considered.
